Requirements for semester, year, and summer study abroad programs
Academic and Disciplinary Standing
Applicants for overseas studies are required to be in good academic and disciplinary standing. Students who will be on active probation during the time of overseas studies are not eligible for study abroad during the period of probation. Students studying abroad are also required to abide by the Conditions of Participation while overseas.
The academic criteria for selection will vary depending on the program and are explained in the program brochures. The following are general university guidelines:
GPA
Minimum grade point average of 3.0 is required for most semester and full year programs.
Most summer programs require a minimum grade point average of 2.7.
Please note: Some programs are more competitive and demand both a better grounding in the major field as well as a higher GPA. Students with special circumstances are encouraged to see their overseas studies advisor to discuss these matters further.
Language Level (non-English speaking sites)
(Summer program applicants should consult with a Summer Program Advisor.)
Spanish, Italian, or French -speaking universities: minimum Advanced II
Those who are applying to Spanish, Italian, or French-speaking universities must take the appropriate Overseas Studies Language Exam. Language exams are designed to determine if a student has sufficient language skills to succeed in a foreign academic environment.
German-speaking universities: minimum GERM 152: Text in Context.
This means that the students must be enrolled in GERM152 no later than the semester before they go abroad. Students who are unable to complete GERM152 also have the option of completing the Trier Summer Program, prior to attending a semester or full year program.
Students interested in Japanese, Russian, Chinese, Arabic and Portuguese programs should check each program's page for specific information regarding the language requirements for the particular site.
