SO YOU'VE BEEN NOMINATED!

Department and Dean's Office Approval

As part of the application process, students will need to meet with the appropriate deans and departments to discuss possible course choices for study abroad. Some Georgetown schools and departments have additional policies governing transfer of credit. It is the student's responsibility to be aware of any rules which apply to his or her specific situation.

Nomination and Nomination Day (semester/full year)

Before students are accepted to their overseas studies program, they have to be nominated by OIP. On nomination day, students will receive an email informing them to log onto the OIP website to find out about their application status and receive instructions.

Nominations are intrinsically conditional. Students must maintain good academic and disciplinary standing. If students' circumstances change (i.e. academic, housing, honor system, or disciplinary violation), it is their responsibility to contact OIP immediately.

Acceptance Email (Summer Programs)

Summer students will receive an email informing them to log onto the OIP website to find out about their application status. Upon receipt of the decision, students should download the required acceptance documents and return signed copies to OIP along with a photocopy of the receipt confirming the deposit of a non-refundable $500 check to the Office of Student Accounts.

OIP Forms

Upon nomination, students have to fill out several forms online and in paper form. These forms will appear on your personal homepage, and the following forms need to be completed by a designated date:

Complete Online
Academic Policy (site-specific)
Program Acceptance Form
Conditions of Participation
Acknowledgment and Assumption of Risk

Complete and Submit to OIP
Health Information Form (optional)

This form will enable the Office of International Programs to better advise students about the services their host university and city may or may not have.

General & Site Specific Orientations

All students accepted to an overseas studies program will participate in mandatory general and site-specific orientations. General orientation will be conducted online through student's Application Homepage while site-specific orientation will be held on campus. The orientation schedule.

Vital academic and administrative information is imparted in OIP orientations. Students are prepared for what is sometimes a difficult cultural and academic adjustment both to the foreign culture and to the host university. Some programs also include mandatory on-site orientation sessions ranging from one day to four weeks in length before the commencement of the university term.

Logistics

All students studying abroad must have a valid passport. Those who already have a passport need to make sure that it does not expire until six months after their return to the US (or longer as specified by host country). Those who do not have a passport should get one as soon as possible. Information on how to obtain a passport can be found on the State Department's website. Students will also be responsible for obtaining appropriate visas. While OIP will provide them with the necessary information and documentation, it is their responsibility to become familiar with the application process and to apply for the visa(s) in a timely manner. OIP will also provide students with program dates as these become available. Making travel arrangements is the student's responsibility.

Site-specific Requirements

Some sites might have additional requirements. Students should check with their OS advisor to see if any specific requirements apply to their study abroad site.

Appeals to Nomination Decisions for Full-Year and Semester Programs

Students who have applied to full-year or semester programs and who were not nominated for study abroad may submit an appeal statement for the Overseas Studies Selection Committee to review its nomination decisions. The deadline for all appeals is 7 days after nominations are made available to students applying to the specific program. Students considering an appeal should speak with their Overseas Studies Advisor for details.
