Financial Aid

Students are encouraged to speak with their financial aid counselor to discuss individual cirumstances. http://finaid.georgetown.edu/contact.htm.

Semester and Full-Year Programs

All forms of financial aid can be applied to Georgetown-APPROVED and IC-Status programs. This includes Georgetown grants, loans, scholarships, and state and federal awards, such as Pell Grants and Guaranteed Student Loans. A financial aid package for a student participating on a Georgetown-APPROVED program will be based on the specific costs of the program in which the student will be studying. The following expenses will be included when calculating a student's financial need: tuition and fees, room and board, books, airfare for one round-trip ticket from the east coast to the host country, and miscellaneous expenses (such as toiletries, limited entertainment, local transportation, police registration fees, immunizations and any health insurance required by the host country).

Summer Programs

The Office of Student Financial Services has limited funds for summer programs abroad. At the end of March, the Financial Services Office posts a Summer Financial Aid Application on its website (http://finaid.georgetown.edu). For the Office of Financial Services to assess your eligibility for summer aid, you must fill out the Summer Financial Aid Application and have a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) on file with the office.

Depending on your eligibility for federal funds and scholarships, you may be eligible to borrow a private education loan to help cover the costs associated with your summer program. You should speak to your counselor in Student Financial Services to learn how best to apply.

Each spring, the Office of International Programs is able to award a few, small fellowships to participants on summer study abroad programs. These awards usually range from $500 to $2,000 and are made according to need and merit. Students who are currently receiving financial aid are immediately considered for these awards; therefore, if you are receiving financial aid, you should be sure to indicate this fact in the Supplemental Information Questionnaire (post-acceptance). The number of awards made each year depends on summer enrollments.

Several Georgetown departments offer financial aid to students participating in specific overseas summer programs. These include:

Associated Colleges in China (ACC) offers limited scholarships for the Beijing program. Awards are merit-based. Students can find more information at: http://www.hamilton.edu/academics/acc/Scholarships.html.

If you are participating on a joint Georgetown-Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) program in St. Petersburg, you may be eligible for financial aid from CIEE. For more information, visit http://www.ciee.org/study/scholarships.aspx.

The National Security Education Project (NSEP) David Boren Scholarship also provides financial assistance to first and second year students on summer language-immersion programs of eight weeks or more. For more information, visit http://borenawards.org/boren_scholarship.
